A journey through golf to enlightenment

HALIFAX, NS – Soon to be released this month, PGA Pro Ed Hanczaryk’s first book titled The Guru in Your Golf Swing is a story that everyone can be inspired by – whether they play golf or not.

A story set high in the Himalayan mountains, surrounded by breathtaking views and the serene practice of the monks, Hanczaryk recounts his experience of leaving his home in the United States to teach golf to youth at a school in Bhutan for five months.

“The story centers around golf, but there is a much larger narrative,” says Hanczaryk. “Yes, it began as a cross-cultural adventure in a very remote place but as the story unfolds you will understand it’s really a book about self-discovery.”

Learning more than he could ever teach, the Guru in Your Golf Swing is based on the true story of giving golf lessons while also receiving lessons in deep meditative practice. The experience, which positively impacted his game and everything else in his life, can teach a lesson to others seeking self-improvement through either sport, mindfulness, or both.

Told first-hand, the author introduces the reader to the landscape, people and traditions of Bhutan as well as one young monk who offers guidance to the answers of many of life’s questions and helps overcome the negative ‘yips’ that can enter one’s mind and impact their game.

“I knew that I could write a how-to golf and how-to-meditate book after this experience, but I wrote it like a fable so the reader can be entertained while also being introduced to the possibilities that come through meditation,” says Hanczaryk. “I think it’s a more appealing way for me to share my experience.”

The reader also learns about Golchery, a game Hanczaryk created to help his young Bhutanese students grasp golf by incorporating the techniques of their beloved national sport; archery.

Guru in Your Golf Swing will be in Nova Scotia bookstores soon or online at SSP Publications and Chapters.
